2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Wilcox Central finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Wilcox Central finished seventh in Class 5A region one with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Jaguars have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2001 season and would love to end that streak this year. The Jaguars last playoff victory came during the 2001 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. Wilcox Central was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Jaguars want to be competitive. They only averaged 19.2 points a game. The Jaguars would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 3-17 record. Since 2010, the Wilcox Central football program has struggled with a record of 12-58. Over the past 25 seasons, Wilcox Central has not won much with a record of 87-171. Their 34.0% winning percentage ranks 50th in Class 5A and 330th in the AHSAA. Their last winning season was 2001. The Jaguars are led by head coach Frederick Newton who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 3-7 record in his first season at Wilcox Central. The Jaguars saw improvement from a 0-10 record the season before coach Newton arrived. The Jaguars have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Newton. Coach Newton's overall record as a head football coach in one season stands at 3-7 (30.0%). The Wilcox Central Jaguars will play in Class 5A region one during the 2017 season. This season, the Jaguars will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region one. The Jaguars open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Ellwood Christian on Friday, August 25 at Memorial Stadium. Last year the Ellwood Christian Eagles finished with an overall record of 0-10 and in seventh place in Class 1A region three. The Eagles closed out the regular season with a loss to Southside Selma by a score of 60-0. Wilcox Central and Ellwood Christian have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Jaguars have a 2-0-0 record against the Eagles. They last met in 2016 with Wilcox Central winning by a score of 32-6. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
